Deputy J.W. Ahern tried to stop a Toyota Sequoia headed west on Garrisonville Road near Eustace Road for not having any rear lights around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said in a release.

Instead of stopping for the minor traffic violation, the driver conducted a U-turn and accelerated eastbound on Garrisonville Road, initiating a pursuit.

The suspect, later identified as Andre Wooding, sped up to 85 mph before turning left onto Center Street and then right onto Barrett Heights Road, authorities said. Ahern provided updates to other deputies in the area as Wooding sped up to nearly 80 mph and turned right onto Onville Road toward Garrisonville Road.

Ahern tried intentional vehicle contact as the suspect made a U-turn at Worth Avenue. Wooding was able to continue, but went off-road into the yard of a residence.

After traversing the lawns of several residences, the suspect reached the fence of Garrison Woods and fled on foot. He squeezed through a hole in the fence as deputies descended on the area.

Deputy T.G. Croson arrived first and saw the suspect bounding through the apartment complex. Despite ordering the suspect to stop, he continued his ill-conceived escape attempt.

As the foot pursuit reached the 300 block of Garrison Woods, Deputy Croson "was able to do something the Dallas Cowboys defense struggled with all night, perform a tackle," the sheriff's release said.

Wooding was quickly detained and identified, then charged with felony eluding, reckless driving, and no driver’s license. Wooding was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
